For me, 2024 is a year of both uncertainty and happiness. At 28, I have restarted my journey of studying abroad—no matter how long or short the road ahead is, whether the skies are clear or stormy! While I may not have achieved dazzling accomplishments, these ordinary moments are the most genuine rewards of my study abroad experience.
A few days ago, I had the opportunity to accompany my professor to a Japanese high school to teach Chinese. As we traveled, the morning mist gradually lifted, and suddenly, a rainbow stretched across the sky—almost as if it was setting the perfect stage for our journey. Along the way, a few classmates and I discussed lesson plans with our professor, brainstorming ways to engage high school students and make learning Chinese more interesting.
Midway through the trip, our professor took us to a café he frequently visits. We enjoyed a cup of rich, aromatic coffee, chatting casually about funny teaching moments and our individual study abroad experiences. It was a lighthearted and pleasant time. Later, we also had the chance to experience the traditional indigo dyeing technique. I personally dyed a unique piece of fabric, which I then crafted into my own canvas bag. Holding this simple yet deeply meaningful creation in my hands, I felt an indescribable sense of fulfillment.
During the class, the students eagerly learned fun phrases like “hǎo hǎo chī” (delicious), “qiú qiú nǐ” (please), and “nǐ hǎo shuài” (you’re so handsome). Their youthful yet slightly shy pronunciation made everyone burst into laughter, instantly dissolving any initial nervousness. At that moment, I truly realized that the beauty of language doesn’t lie in its complexity, but in its ability to bring joy and connection.
This is what studying abroad feels like—filled with the unknown, yet brimming with delightful surprises. These seemingly ordinary experiences are what paint the softest hues of life. In 2024, in the name of happiness, I will continue to embrace every moment, to feel deeply, to record my journey, and to become the truest version of myself!
