I have been studying at Tokai University for a while now, and the transition from initial adaptation to full integration has given me deeper insights into my studies and life here. My time in Japan has allowed me to grow not only academically but also in terms of cultural exchange and personal development.

Adapting to Life in a Small City

Tokai University is located in Tokai City, a relatively small town. When I first arrived, I immediately noticed the clear differences compared to China’s big cities—slower pace of life, earlier store closings, and less-developed public transportation. At first, I felt somewhat out of place, but over time, I grew accustomed to the lifestyle and began to appreciate its charm. The natural environment here is beautiful, with fresh air and distinct seasons. Nearby attractions like the Naruto Whirlpools and Mt. Biei have allowed me to experience the grandeur of nature. Furthermore, the local people are incredibly warm and friendly, and both professors and students at the university have been supportive in helping me integrate into the community.

The Japanese Learning System

Compared to universities in China, Japanese universities place greater emphasis on independent learning and fostering students' personal interests. This approach has given me more freedom in the classroom, but also required greater self-discipline. For example, many courses require us to read and research on our own, and then discuss or present our ideas in class. One experience that stood out to me was the university's "Academy Festival," where I truly felt the value placed on both individual passion and teamwork. Students carefully prepare various exhibits, performances, and activities, not only to showcase their talents but also to demonstrate strong collective spirit. This atmosphere has given me a new understanding of the Japanese approach to learning and motivated me to better manage my study pace and enhance my self-motivation.

Gains from International Exchange

One of the greatest benefits of exchange programs is the opportunity to meet students from all over the world. During my time here, I’ve made friends from different countries, and our conversations have greatly expanded my international perspective. Different cultural backgrounds bring different ways of thinking, and in our daily communications, we often share aspects of our respective culture, customs, and viewpoints. Whether it’s a group discussion in class or casual chats during breaks, I can feel the excitement of cultural exchange. This experience has made me realize the importance of cross-cultural communication in today’s globalized world, and this exchange has been an excellent opportunity to develop that skill.

Travel Experiences in Japan

During my free time, I have visited famous cities like Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto. Each place has its own distinct charm and appeal. Tokyo is a hub of modernity and vibrancy, Osaka is renowned for its food culture, and Kyoto’s ancient temples and historical sites left a lasting impression on me. Among these, Kyoto’s autumn leaves are some of my favorite sights—temples surrounded by vibrant red leaves, almost as if I were inside a painting. Through my travels, I’ve not only admired Japan’s beautiful landscapes but also gained a deeper understanding of the cultural characteristics unique to different regions.

Insights and Reflections on Japan

As I’ve spent more time in Japan, my understanding of the country has become more balanced and realistic. Initially, many things felt fresh and idealized, but through deeper engagement with Japanese society, I’ve come to realize that it’s not just about the orderly environment and cleanliness. Every society has its strengths and challenges. For instance, Japan’s convenience store culture and attention to detail in the service industry are highly commendable. However, the strict societal rules and relatively conservative workplace culture also present challenges. This more comprehensive understanding of Japan has helped me think more maturely and rationally, encouraging me to consider different cultures and social systems with a balanced perspective.

Conclusion and Future Outlook

My exchange experience is still ongoing, and I believe I will continue to gain more in terms of academics, cultural exchange, and personal growth in the coming months. I am grateful for this opportunity provided by the university, as well as the support of the professors, classmates, and friends I have met here. I will cherish the remaining time of my exchange, continue working hard in my studies, and deepen my understanding of Japanese culture. At the same time, I hope to bring the knowledge and experiences I’ve gained back to China and use them to build a stronger foundation for my future studies and development.
