A Journey of Transformation: My Life-Changing Exchange in Japan
This time, I was fortunate enough to obtain the opportunity to study in Japan as an exchange student. During this precious period, I not only enhanced my language skills but also deeply immersed myself in Japanese culture, reaping abundant rewards.
Embracing the Unknown
When I first arrived in Japan, I struggled with navigating public transportation and adjusting to local cuisine. Over time, I gradually adapted to this new environment. As a graduate student in Japanese studies, my coursework focused on advanced language analysis and cultural research. The classroom dynamics differed significantly from those in China—students took greater initiative in self-directed learning, engaged actively in discussions, and professors consistently encouraged independent thinking. This interactive teaching style helped me become more confident in expressing my opinions and strengthened my critical thinking skills.
Academic Enlightenment
Beyond academics, I gained profound appreciation for Japanese cultural values. The emphasis on etiquette left a lasting impression—from daily greetings to the orderly queues at train stations, every gesture reflected deep-rooted respect. What surprised me most was Japan’s bookstore culture. Whether in large chains or cozy independent shops, I discovered rare literary treasures that enriched my research into Japanese literature.
Cultural Immersion
This semester, I have experienced a variety of extracurricular activities such as flower arrangement, dormitory - living culture, and skiing. These activities have given me a more intuitive understanding of Japanese culture and deepened my understanding of the similarities and differences between Chinese and Japanese cultures. Moreover, I have made many Japanese friends. They patiently introduced the local customs and practices to me, and we often exchanged views on the cultural differences between China and Japan, enhancing mutual understanding.
Harvesting Growth
This exchange experience in Japan enhanced my academic growth and personal development. Ilearned to think independently and solve problems, while gaining a deeper appreciation for the importance of cultural exchange. The journey broadened my horizons and made me cherish the invaluable opportunities brought by cross-cultural interactions. I believe this experience will profoundly influence my future, inspiring me to continue exploring the world and embracing new challenges.
